Bread Garden Market was founded in 1995 by Iowa City restaurateur Jim Mondanaro with a simple philosophy: bring exceptional food traditions from around the world into everyday life. Inspired by the sourdoughs of San Francisco, the cafés of Italy, and the pâtisseries of Paris, Jim built Bread Garden around quality-first ingredients, artisan craftsmanship, and food made fresh daily — never frozen.
After more than 50 years in the Iowa City restaurant community, Bread Garden became the culmination of everything he learned along the way: a market centered around freshness, hospitality, and thoughtfully made food.
In 2012, Bread Garden moved from its original home to the Iowa City Pedestrian Mall, expanding into the full market experience it is today.
